Course Selection Advice

Here is where you can find information on courses offered at St Catherine's College (and applicable ones for St Patrick's College) to help you plan your Future Career Pathway. Follow the steps below because they will help you make the right decisions.

Step 1: Look back on subjects taken before because it helps you to know what you are good at and where your interests are. 

Step 2: Choose subjects for a range of careers. If you need more information go to https://www.careers.govt.nz/

Step 3: Choose subjects for the course you want to study at tertiary level. Some career pathways have prerequisite courses that you need to have qualifications for. Research carefully so you make the right choices.

Step 4: Check the subjects are right for NCEA. There are variations between the courses eg some have more externally assessed standards, and some have more internally assessed standards.

Step 5: Talk to your parents and caregivers. These are the people who know you well. Ask them about what they think would be an amazing career for you.

Step 6: Speak with our Career Pathways Adviser. Mrs Miller has a wealth of advice to offer you. You can email her at [email protected] go and see her in the careers office or contact her through Career Central. 

Step 7: Get subject choices in on time. The due date for course selection is 20th September, 2024

Why it's important to take STEM subjects.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and maths. The government has identified these subject areas as the most important ones for New Zealand’s future. It is predicted that almost all future jobs will require some STEM knowledge.

The STEM subjects are closely related to each other at school and in tertiary training. For example, maths provides the foundation for studying physics, and physics provides the foundation for studying engineering. Here are some links to look at these subjects

Creating your own course plan

Basic Steps: Find your Course > Save as a favourite > Or save as a selected course

Students have the ability to create a course plan that helps them reach their milestones that they have set for themselves for their future.

Students have the ability to add courses to their Favourite list / as one of their selected Courses

Favourite courses are courses that they are planning to take in future or that will count towards their career goals.

 How to choose my Courses:

  1. Log into SchoolPoint
  2. Navigate to "Courses" in the left hand navigation
  3. Navigate to "Learning Areas" in the sub menu
  4. Select the Learning Area that matches your needs ie English
  5. You will be navigated to a page that meet your prerequisites and include useful information such as course details, courses in that learning area/faculty/department and career options relating to that course.
  6. Click on the course that meets your requirements.
  7. You will be taken to a page that includes useful information such as course description, pathway and recommended prior learning.
  8. Click on the "Add to your Favourites Courses" button to add this course to your favourite list. Click the same button to view a list of your Favourite Courses. Click on the name of the course to remove it.
  9. Click on the "+ Select as one of my Courses" button to add this course to your Selected list. Click the same button to remove it.
  10. Click on the "View my Courses" To view a summary of your courses.

 

How to Edit a Course that you have Selected:

  1. Log into SchoolPoint
  2. Navigate to "Courses" in the left hand navigation
  3. Navigate to "My Courses" in the sub menu
  4. Find the Course that you would like to Edit.
  5. Click on the "Information" button.
  6. You will be taken to a page that includes useful information such as course description, pathway and recommended prior learning.
  7. Click on the "Add to your Favourites Courses" button to add this course to your favourite list. Click the same button to view a list of your favourite courses. Click on the name of the course to remove it.
  8. Click on the "+ Select as one of my Courses" button to add this course to your selected list. Click the same button to remove it.
  9. Click on the "View my Courses" To view a summary of your courses.
