Course Description

OBJECTIVES/COURSE CONTENT:
On completing this course students should be able to:
•Write clearly, correctly and interestingly in a variety of genres;
•Speak and listen effectively and appropriately;
•Read and analyse a range of texts, both literary and visual.

These objectives cover the range of objectives of English in the New Zealand Curriculum
Students will complete three external assessments and some of the internally assessed standards listed below.
Most internally assessed work is carried out throughout the year as portfolio collections of writing, with final assessments in Term Three. The work for AS1.10 (Form personal responses to independently read texts, supported by evidence) requires a total of SIX reading responses, with two due each at the end of each term and the final assessment completed by the end of Term Three.
Marks from AS1.6 (Construct and deliver an oral text) are carried over from Year 10 English. 

Students are expected to gain Level 1 Literacy (10 credits of Literacy) from this course.

Week 1 - 3: Course introduction - set up Writing Folios (working all year towards AS1.4 and AS1.5); set up Reading Logs (AS1.10); Writing tasks, based on short film – for Writing Portfolio; Reading Logs (AS1.10) – 2 responses completed by end of term;
Writing Tasks (AS1.4/AS1.5);
Set up Unseen text exploration (AS1.3) –using Livewire Learning programme – weekly tasks (on Google Classroom and Livewire Learning digital platform)

Week 4 - 7: Theme: Society and Control
Literature study – short stories – a selection including “Examination Day”, “A Place in the Sun”, “The Lottery”, “Once Upon a Time”
Further writing opportunities – working towards Formal Writing assessment in Week 7 (AS1.4)
Formative assessment – towards AS1.1 (external – Response to written text)
Formative assessment - literary essay - for Formal Writing (AS1.5) Week 7 – towards final Portfolio
Formative assessment – essay writing – AS1.1

Week 8 - 11: Static Image: Revise static image design – layout; symbolism; use of colour, font, etc.
Design static image in response to one thematic aspect of one short story – complete AS1.7 by end of Week 10

Term 2
Week 1 - 6: Theme: Community and Responsibility
Literature study – film - “Lars and the Real Girl” - character, setting, plot, themes, style; includes essay-writing.
AsTTle reading test – first lesson of Term Two;
Formative assessment – towards AS1.2 (external – Response to visual text)

Week 7 - 10: Writing: Creative writing - developing creative writing techniques; producing a range of creative writing for Writing Portfolio
Formative creative writing pieces, collected in Writing Portfolio for final assessment at the end of Term Three

Unseen text exploration (AS1.3) – using Livewire Learning programme – weekly tasks on Google Classroom

Reading Logs (AS1.10) – 2 responses completed by end of term



Term 3
Week 1: Formal writing – introduce AS1.5 – for summative assessment - Formative formal writing pieces collected in Writing Portfolio for final assessment by end of Term Three.

Week 2 - 5: Theme: Community and Justice
Literature Study – “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck - character, setting, genre and style, thematic links to school-wide theme of Care for the Poor and Vulnerable
Formative assessment – essay writing – AS1.1

Week 6 - 10: Reading Logs and formal writing completed in class; with teacher assistance, choose best pieces of formal and creative writing to edit and publish for Formal Writing assessment (AS1.5) and Creative Writing assessment (AS1.4) (Summative Formal Writing assessment (AS1.5) and summative Creative Writing assessment (AS1.4) completed by end of term)

Term 4
Week 1: Derived grade practice examinations – AS1.1; AS1.2; AS1.3
Develop study programme based on practice examinations – check strengths and weaknesses

Week 2 - 3: Examination revision - critical literary and expressive responses.
Study leave for NCEA begins Friday, October 30th.
NCEA examinations start Friday, November 6th
Practise exam questions; study leave begins October 30th
